    Political institutions: Turkey is a parliamentary democracy. The Turkish Grand Assembly, elected by all the citizens over 19 years old, is the direct descendant of the Congress formed by Atatürk after the war of independence (beginning of the 1920s). The president, elected by the Assembly for seven years, is supposed to place himself above the parties, symbolising the nation. He names the head of the government, who holds the real power.
